1525 was a significant year in the reign of Henry VIII, and in the life of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey. The king and his Chancellor together founded ‘Cardinal College’ (now Christ Church) Oxford.

They also faced open rebellion from Henry’s subjects over the so-called ‘Amicable Grant’.  At Wolsey’s manor house of The More, in Hertfordshire, they concluded one of the most significant international treaties of Henry’s reign.

Taking the 500th anniversary of these other events as its starting point, this study day reviews Wolsey’s career, achievements and posthumous reputation in fact, fiction and film, bringing new research and insights to bear on his record as one of Renaissance England’s greatest statesmen and patrons.

Please note: this event will close to enrolments at 23:59 on Wednesday 8 October 2025.
