Hoskins Day – June 2026.
Saturday 27th June 2026, 12:00AM – 4:30PM, University of Leicester Room 101 Attenborough Building.
Shall we fight them on the beaches? Landscapes of coastal defence in the Second World War.

The keynote speaker will be Robert Liddiard, Professor of History, School of History and Art History at the University of East Anglia. After undergraduate and postgraduate study at UEA, Robert Liddiard worked as a research assistant for the University of Western Australia, Perth.
He then spent two years teaching at the University of Wales, Bangor before returning to UEA to take up his current post in September 2002.

Robert will talk about how the building of extensive anti-invasion defences along the coastline changed not only the physical landscape but also shaped the lives and experience of local communities who suddenly found themselves on Britain’s front line.
By taking a local and regional and landscape-driven approach, it is possible to gain new insights into a subject normally the preserve of military archaeologists.
The event is free and open to all, but please register so we know how many to cater for.
