Black Country History Day: Protest and Dissent in Black Country History – October 2026.

On Saturday 17th October 2026, 10.00AM to 4.40PM at the Black Country Living Museum, Discovery Way, Dudley, DY1 4AL The Black Country Society in conjunction with The Black Country Living Museum present a day conference, in person, cost £30 (includes lunch and parking).

This history day looks firstly at how the Black Country Living Museum has represented the activities of protest groups including trade unions, women chain makers and the suffragettes.

Other presentations will look at political and religious protest in early and mid-nineteenth century Dudley, the Miners’ Strike of 1864 and, in the twentieth century, the complex protest background to the 1964 Election in Smethwick.

The final session will be a presentation of protest songs in the Black Country in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
