The BALH Dymond Lecture – December 2026.

Since 2021 the BALH has been running an annual lecture each winter, welcoming distinguished academics to share their research. This is now a highlight or the BALH annual calendar for both members and the wider public to enjoy. The 2026 lecture is being given by Dr Joan Heggie, an independent scholar and visiting research fellow at King’s College London, formerly research fellow at Teesside University.
Middlesbrough, Scarborough, Halifax & Hull: Using the Registers of Deeds to evidence women’s capital investment in 19th century Yorkshire.
Joan’s current research draws on the Yorkshire Registers of Deeds to investigate property transfers, particularly women’s role within transactions.
The Registers of Deeds are particularly ‘name rich’ and therefore ideal for genealogists and local historians, as well as for academic research.
Funded by the British Academy (2021–23), Joan is using mortgage documentation to establish the level of capital investment in four Yorkshire towns across the three ridings of Yorkshire in the late 19th century.
