The Loseley Chapel – July 2026.

On Thursday 2 July 2026, 7:00PM – 9:00PM at Surrey History Centre, Surrey History Trust will hold their AGM followed by a free talk on The Loseley Chapel by Dr. Catherine Ferguson.

The Loseley Chapel, attached to St Nicolas’ Church in Guildford, serves broadly as the memorial chapel of the More and More-Molyneux family of Loseley. It also houses the oldest monument in Guildford: the tomb of Arnold Brocas, dating from 1395.

Authorities on Surrey’s historic buildings, including Pevsner and the Victoria County History, have dated the chapel variously between the 14th and late 15th centuries. If accurate, these dates would predate the arrival of the More family in Surrey. This lecture therefore explores the central question of when and why the Loseley Chapel was constructed.

The study draws on a wide range of sources, including architectural analysis, paintings, drawings, plans and descriptions from the Gentleman Magazine, as well as documentary evidence from the Loseley Manuscripts, Guildford Borough Records, and the Court of Augmentations records held at The National Archives. It also considers important physical evidence uncovered during the restoration of the chapel and its monuments in 2016–17, not available to earlier interpretations.

This presentation is FREE but booking is essential. Please note, the talk will follow the AGM.
